Sometimes used with acupuncture, moxibustion (moxa) is a form of heat treatment. It uses a particular herb which is lit and held over specific acupuncture points. This penetrates deeply into the area it is applied to, accelerating recovery, strengthening the body and dispersing dampness, cold and pain. By promoting the flow of the Qi, it is able to remove stagnation while having a calming effect on the patient. Moxibustion is very effective for knee and lumbar and sacral pain that comes in cold, damp weather. It is also a good energy lift for tiredness and to help recover after a prolonged illness.
The Chinese physicians believed that it was very beneficial to have moxibustion during the coldest days of winter, and for anyone over the age of 40 years, it would help boost their Qi if it was done regularly.
